What is an IEP?
An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a written plan for a child who qualifies for special education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). It describes the child's current performance, annual goals, and the services, supports, and accommodations the school will provide.
What if my child has a 504 plan instead of an IEP?
Highlighter works with 504 plans too. You can upload the plan, get a plain-language summary of its accommodations, and prepare for 504 meetings the same way.
Is Highlighter a substitute for an advocate or attorney?
No. Highlighter helps you understand your documents and prepare. For complex disagreements or legal disputes, you may still want a professional advocate or a special education attorney, and many families use Highlighter alongside one.
How does Highlighter protect my family's information?
Everything is sent over an encrypted connection, and our database is encrypted at rest. We never sell your family's information or share it with your child's school or district. Anything the school receives, you send yourself.
Will the school know I'm using Highlighter?
Only if you tell them. Emails you draft are sent from your own email address.
